From Pioneering Momentum to Standstill: My Reflections on Myanmar’s Innovation Tech Ecosystem

Looking back at the last decade, Myanmar’s tech and innovation scene was alive with energy and ambition. We weren’t trying to be the next Silicon Valley or Berlin, but there was a real hunger for new ideas and bold thinking. Hackathons lit up weekends, co-working spaces were alive with collaboration, and for the first time, a generation of young founders and tech enthusiasts believed they could build something world-class from home.

I was fortunate to witness this from the front lines as a founder of one of the earliest digital agencies in Myanmar, as an advocate for women in tech, and as someone who was involved in building a tech start-up ecosystem and innovation for social impact work. Our resources were few. Our digital infrastructure was fragile. What we didn’t have in terms of funding or supportive policies, we made up for with pure determination and a collective belief in what was possible.

Even now, I remember the excitement at grassroots events like Ideabox or Phandeeyar; the way strangers became teammates, and wild ideas turned into real prototypes overnight. For a precious window of time, Myanmar was running forward, full of possibility.

Today, things are harder. Political and economic upheaval, digital censorship, and fear have made it so much more difficult to build and to dream. Places that once thrived with activity are now still, and the voices that filled them have been muted or scattered.

Yet, even as the official ecosystem struggles, the story isn’t over.

Because innovation is never just about what happens in boardrooms or conference halls. It is about the persistence of spirit and the willingness to keep creating, connecting, and imagining despite the odds. And that, I believe, is something no amount of censorship or repression can erase.

Living now in Europe, I see up close what’s possible when ideas are truly free to move and when creativity is nurtured. But I also see echoes of that same spirit I remember from Myanmar. I see it in the resilience of those who have left, in the networks of support that exist across borders, and in every small project, community, or startup that refuses to give up.

So, while the landscape may look very different now, I have no doubt that Myanmar’s innovation story will continue. The roots of innovation are still there, simply waiting for a new spark to grow strong again when the opportunity returns. And when it does, I know the world will be surprised by what emerges.
